Where is the Love?

The world feels like a pretty dark place right now. Brexit is happening, Donald Trump doesn’t seem to be going away, and I can’t turn on the news without hearing about another mass shooting or terror attack. The past couple of months I’ve seen more and more bigotry, racism, homophobia and sexism on social media from people I’m connected with than ever before. It has genuinely upset me, and I’ve struggled until now to write anything that I’ve been comfortable to post. Even today I’m not sure whether this will ever leave my increasingly growing collection of draft posts.

Does Love Really Win?

‘Love Wins’

I’ve heard that phrase a lot over the last couple of days. It’s a message that gives us hope in the midst of tragedies like we saw in Orlando this weekend. The mantra that we cry in the face of terror, extremism and hate crimes. It gives us hope that eventually good will prevail over evil, love will prevail over hate. It’s a phrase that caused thousands of people all around the world to hold vigils on Monday night, remembering the lives that were lost under such terrible circumstances. Last year at pride I marched in the parade holding a sign with that message, with hundreds of others declaring this message across the world. But last night, after a day of hearing the stories of innocent people who died after that horrific homophobic attack, and seeing people blaming and scapegoating the Islamic community for the acts of a small minority; I asked myself, does love really win?

Losing Faith

Through my youth I was what I call a super Christian. I went to every Christian event I could, from festivals to prayer nights to worship conferences. All the music I listened to was Christian, I was involved in as many church activities as I could fit in my calendar, played in the church band, sang in the choir, lead in the youth group, the list goes on. I was so passionate about Jesus, so on fire for my faith and so excited to tell everyone I could about the ‘good news’.

Can I Be Gay And Christian?

A few years ago I was at a Christian youth festival, working with the detached team. As part of the week, we ran a debate night called “Grill a Christian”, where anyone could come and ask questions to do with faith and life; we would do our best to answer and talk about them. One girl stood up towards the end of the evening and asked the question “Can I be gay and Christian?”…

Who Am I?

Who am I? That’s a question I’ve asked myself a lot recently. In the midst of losing my job, travelling the world, falling in love, trying to break back into the music industry, making some amazing friends and having my heart-broken; my whole life seems to have changed in the past few months and I’ve been left with this question burning on my mind. Who am I?

God’s Graffiti

One of my new favourite places to go in London right now is Leake Street. If you have never heard of it, it is a tunnel that runs underneath Waterloo Station, and is one of the few places in London where graffiti is legal. In 2008, Banksy used this tunnel to, in his words, “transform a dark forgotten filth pit into an oasis of beautiful art”. Since then, dozens of amateur and established artists meet there every day, to create new stories and adventures in a dark tunnel underneath the busiest train station in the UK…

Sex Shops and Christian Acronyms

I recently travelled to San Francisco. One afternoon, we were shopping around Union Square. There are hundreds of shops there, from Apple to Levis, all the way to vintage book stores and eight floors of Macy’s. Just as the sun was setting and we had finished our burritos from Chipotle, I found myself in a shop unlike any I’d been to in my whole life. It was a little store called Good Vibrations and, from the outside, looked like most other shops, but the inside was a whole other story – it was a sex shop.
