Do you have the power to change the world?
If you did, what would you change?
It’s a big question – because let’s face it, there is a lot that is wrong with the world today. Theresa May wants to scrap the Human Rights Act, over 10,000 innocent people have killed in the last 5 years which has caused what the United Nations is calling ‘the biggest refugee and displacement crisis of our time’, hundreds of men in Chechnya have been abducted and tortured because they are gay, I could go on… It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that there is nothing we can do the change this.
But what if we can?
In my last post, I wrote about how my generation, the ‘Snowflake Generation’ as we are called, are finally starting to realise that we have a voice in politics. As we can see from the last election, where some constituencies were won with a majority of a handful of votes, every single vote counts. Every single vote, every single person in a democracy, matters, and when we speak out collectively, it makes a difference.
I’ve just finished watching the second season of Netflix’s sci-fi drama, Sense8. If you haven’t seen it yet, I won’t spoil it, but it ends on an enourmous cliffhanger. Not long after the series was released, Netflix announced that Sense8 was cancelled, and the internet went CRAZY. Petitions were started, masses of angry tweets and messages were sent, thousands of people took to their keyboards and demanded the story was resolved. It wasn’t long before Netflix listened and commissioned a 2-hour long final episode to give us a proper conclusion.
I work for an incredible charity called Amnesty International, the largest human rights organisation in the world. Amnesty is essentially a movement of over 7.5 million individuals who are inspired to make the world a fairer, safer place for everybody. By coming together, we can put pressure on governments to change their laws and policies, and stand up against human rights abuses happening all over the world. Working together on over 4,000 campaigns across 150 countries, we’re able to have an incredible impact on the world and help people in all kinds of situations.
We are one human family, and we need to look after one another. If one of us suffers an injustice, it opens up the possibility for any of us to suffer. What that means, is that when we hear about what is happening in the world, whether it’s the refugee crisis, the fact that 82% of countries are torturing their own citizens or the UK government caring more about cutting costs than people’s rights. We have a responsibility to do something about it.
We do have the power to change things; we don’t have to sit back and allow people’s rights to be taken away from them. Every single one of us has a voice, so, if you’re not already, use yours. And in the words of the video below – take some fucking action!
